Timberland Chocura Mid Hiking Boots:
(A Review by John our product expert)
Sometimes I want a mix of style, endurance and comfort in my hiking boot. Timberland Goretex Hiking Boots sit perfectly in that middle ground between function and fashion, where you can walk the trail whilst looking great. You know what I mean – nothing too flashy but not clunky either.
I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen Timberland for hiking shoes in the past. Timberland have always projected manly lumberjack on the city street, so I expected these Timberland Chocura to be more for the high street than the mountain trail. Yet, there are some great features in these walking shoes that will keep you stable and comfortable on a mix of terrain. Let me take you through some of the details to help you see if these are the boots for you.
Product Summary
Here are the crucial details about the Timberland Goretex walking shoes:
Brand and Model: Timberland Chocura Trail Mid with Goretex Membrane, Men’s High-Rise Hiking Shoes
Best Points: Great for all round use, lightweight, waterproof, look great
Downsides: Only suitable for light terrain, not for sustained use like when backpacking
Use: for general outdoor use; light hiking
Overview
Timberland Chocura are one of the bestselling hiking boots. This inspired me to give Timberland a go and see if these shoes could deal with my normal guy use. So, how did I put these boots to the test? Well, I went for long walk in the rain over a mix of terrain, to test just how waterproof and sturdy these boots really are.
My first impressions of the timberland gore tex hiking boots were positive. The boots looked strong and like they would offer great support – offering more for the money than I would have expected. They have been designed well, giving the impression of a serious hiker rather than someone looking for a fashion boot. The logos may be a bit too prominent for some – on the tongue of the shoe and on the heel. It shouts man trying hard to look good whilst posing on a mountainside – but this is not too much of an issue really. They are the colour of the boot and will likely only stand out whilst new.
There are two colours that you can choose from. There is brown with green and then brown and green. This is not a joke about how there is only army coloured boots available to hike in… there is actually a difference between the two. One is mostly brown with a tinge of green and the other is a mix of the two colours. The colour is perfect for keeping the boots looking great even when you have trampled through a muddy puddle. Beware though – after a while I noticed light brown patches appearing in the upper. This didn’t impact too much on the look of the boot but it was a bit of a disappointment.
The upper is constructed from premium full-grain waterproof leather, combined with a goretex membrane. This means that the waterproof credentials are impressive and I can say from experience of walking in the rain that my toes stayed dried! The boots actually did great at keeping my feet comfortable and my ankles felt supported – though I did wonder if they would be up to more energetic use than I put them to.
Generally, Timberland Goretex Hiking Boots look great and work well for light use. Want more information? I will take you through the key areas in some more detail.
Key Features of the timberland gore tex hiking boots
- Timberland gore tex hiking boots

- Adjustable, rustproof lacing system
- Removable contoured sockliner
- Solid rubber outsole with lugs
- Colour options: Brown and Green
- Weight: 2lbs
If you like your boots traditional, then the Timberland gore tex hiking boots are for you. The boots look like they should be on the feet of serious hikers. The premium leather upper makes these boots look more expensive than they are, as do the rustproof metal lacing hoops. The lacing system looks like rivets up the boot and add a touch of luxury. In reality, they are quite difficult to lace if you need to put new laces in. But, let’s not let ease of use get in the way of a good-looking boot!
The soles look sturdy and the grip visible. This gives the boot the professional look for backpackers, without looking too overbearing. These soles are made of solid rubber and again give a feel of expense. Some other boots I have seen tend to look a little more like plastic. Timberland have done well with the look of these boots.
The colour choice is pretty limited to green and brown. If you are serious about walking in your boots then this is a practical choice of colour, as any mud splashes are largely hidden.
In short, if you like boots that look like they are meant for walking in, that look more expensive than they are and will continue to keep their looks after use – then these boots are for you.
Support and Stability
The ankle support of the timberland gore tex hiking boots is the single most highly praised feature of Timberland Chocura hiking boots. The ankle shaft is 5 inches from the arch, which is typical for hiking boots of this kind. It is the level of padding in the ankle shaft that gives these boots such stability.
Protection is high in the toe area too. The toe box will feel a bit stiff when you first wear these boots. I have always been told to walk around the house and the local area for a while in boots before taking them on the trail, just for this reason. The leather is going to be a little stiff and unforgiving until you walk your boots in. I actually like that the toe box is so rigid. I don’t want squashed toes when I am out walking if a rock falls or I snag my foot against something hard. You can’t have steel toe caps whilst you are walking, without some serious weight added to your feet. For me, rigid leather is the right mix of light-weight and durable – it is exactly the feel I want.
The sole gets a little trickier. The grip is great. The durable leather sole will keep you on your feet well enough. In truth though the sole feels a little light-weight for extensive hiking and I would imagine with the serious hit of a backpacker or mountain walker – these are not going to last that long or continue to offer the stability you need. The soles will hold you up over mud, rocks and snow. So, they are all-terrain. However, if you want something that will hold up to a lot of punishment then you are likely going to have to pay a little more money.
Comfort
Timberland Goretex walking shoes are sold on comfort. The advertising talks about an all-day comfort and the boots really do perform well in this area. The Goretex technology gets a big play in all the material you read about this boot and this is for a good reason: waterproof and great circulation of air. Keeping your feet dry needs to be number one in comfort terms. It is no good if the boot keeps the water out but your feet sweat like mad inside. The boot does well at generally keeping all moisture away from your feet and preventing any sore spots!
I didn’t put the waterproofness of the boots to a full test. From all accounts the shoes do well in all terrains but I wouldn’t want to put them through a serious winter if I wanted them to last more than a few months. I would say keep these boots for the other three seasons and avoid deep water submergence or too much exposure to snow. If you take care of these boots I would say they should last a good few years – but not if put them to heavy use.
There is a removable insole for additional comfort. Never having been one to put hiking boots through too much before now, I had no idea why this was important. But, as things can get pretty smelly in there – removable is a good thing. The insoles lasted well too. I had no thought that I needed to add any other insole in there for extra padding. So, these insoles do create a comfortable bed for your foot. I walked pretty much all day and my feet felt fine throughout – high praise for a walking shoe, I think.
The tongue on the timberland gore tex hiking boots and the collar of the boot have a lot of cushioning, which makes your ankles feel held tight without fear of rubbing. The lacing loops hold the lace well and there isn’t a constant annoyance of the boots coming unlaced. Imagine all the bending down you are saved from! I heard that these loops bend quite easy – which is a bit of a failure – but I guess you can bend them right back again if needed.
Use
Timberland Goretex Hiking Boots are best used for day hikes on well-established trails in relatively good weather. To be fair, they could handle off trail hiking too for a while – but you may not get the longevity you would hope from the boots if you put them through too much. For the price you might think that a year of use is still a bargain, in which case, go for it! You could probably do some hard miles in these before they gave out – just don’t trust them for a mountain hike or a long backpacking holiday.
The traditional look, smart and functional, mean these boots are also a good option for work boots too. The hard toe means that they can take a whack from a spade without harm. They are also good-looking enough for travelling the streets for wannabe lumberjacks. Seriously, day-to-day in a pair of jeans – these boots do look the part. They look cool whilst being a good option in the winter months for comfort and protection, even if you don’t hike.
How good are these boots?
The positive bits:
- Great value for money
- Leather and rubber – quality durable materials for the price
- Sturdy ankle support
- Goretex technology keeps the feet dry from the inside and the outside
- Look good enough just to wear about the streets on a winter’s day
The downsides of the timberland gore tex hiking boots:
- Bendable, difficult to lace eyelets
- Some reports of fading brown spots in the leather after a while
Conclusion:
For the money you pay you get a lot of boot that will last a good while if you take care of them!
Overall
Honestly, I really like these timberland gore tex hiking boots. I am not a massive victim of fashion – so the logo and branding doesn’t do it for me – but the leather and Goretex padding give these a classic look that I really love. The boots kept my feet comfortable after a long day of hiking in the rain. My feet stayed dry and I was sure the boots could have taken much more punishment – if I had been fit enough! My ankles felt well supported and I was confident to place my feet on wet rock and mud alike. I am not sure there is much more you could ask from a hiking boot than comfort and security in taking a step.
The only question hanging over these boots is the durability in more difficult terrain or when putting in the hard mile – but the cost is so reasonable – you can’t expect too much for this price.
All in all – a great boot – and I am now going to enjoy wearing them as I walk to the bar for the drink I have earned testing them out!
